Just... Life

Grocery shopping, laundry, Adelaide, karaoke... just our day-to-day stuff going on around here. Lots of changes coming but I'll write about those another time.

Well, for some reason Blogger has changed my layout to Center Align. Spent the last 10 minutes trying to correct it. Oh well.

Chuck and I took a drive out to the Maltby Cafe, we've been hearing stories of their breakfasts and their cinnamon rolls. Both were so good!

Under the little awning on the left front and down some stairs is where you enter.

The place was packed so I didn't take pictures inside but we'll definitely go again.
The cinnamon roll had to weight a couple pounds, it was huge! I forgot to take a picture of ours so I got this pic off the internet...

We brought it home and it took the three of us a few days to finish it!

I'll leave you with one more photo of Adelaide...

We Did It! The Sleep Study Is Over

A few days before Beth was supposed to have the study done, I took her to the clinic to get a look at the rooms and talk a little about what was gonna happen. She asked how long we'd be there, what day we'd be home... We've learned it helps her when we explain things ahead of time and give her the timeline.

(We went to New York in 2004 and Beth was so mad the whole time. Until we figured out that she thought this was our life now. Once she learned it was temporary and we'd be back home soon, she perked right up!)

Just one of a few pictures we have like this:

So now we always plan ahead. 👍

On Thursday we got to the clinic at about 8:30 and they took us to the room. We immediately felt like we were on vacation, it was so much like a hotel room. We loved it and made ourselves right at home!

The tech came in and started hooking Beth up to all the wires, gosh there were so many! Beth watched Madagascar 3 while the tech and I (why can't I remember her name?!) talked about traveling.

(Sharaya and Diana are actually in New Orleans right now and the tech - I'll call her T - took her husband there for his birthday a couple years ago.)

We sat and watched TV for a while before climbing into bed. T brought in a cot, basically it was a roll-away bed for me to sleep on, and turned out most of the lights. When we were finally ready for bed, I think it was about 10:30, we called T and she came in to help Beth get into bed.

That large pad with all the wires coming out of it actually attached to the wall and transmitted all the data so she didn't have to sleep with that but there was still a lot of stuff! After she got into bed, we had to straighten all the wires out and then we turned out the lights and went to sleep.

I woke up at about 3:30 and just watched Beth for a few minutes. She hadn't moved at all since we crawled into bed and I saw her reach up and scratch her neck. But it was very controlled and methodical, like she was awake. I of course laid there wondering if the lamp we left on was keeping her awake but she didn't want to wake me to tell me.

So I got up to check on her and she looked like she was asleep. I turned the lamp off and they had a pretty bright night light built into the wall so I quietly went back to bed.

T came in at about 6:00 to wake us up and the first thing Beth said was, "I did it!!"

She had told me before we got there that she was a little nervous, but she really did great! We got up and T took all the equipment and the stuff off of her and told us there was a survey we needed to fill out on the computer. I sat back and let Beth do the whole thing. She read the questions out loud and then clicked on the appropriate answer. 'How well did you sleep?' 'Did you have heartburn?' One of the questions asked if anything had woken her up during the night. "Yeah. When you turned off the lamp." Oh. 😀 Whoops!! So she wrote, "When my mom trun off the lamp." (Yes, trun!)

T said they got some good data and that Beth did really well. We went home, took a shower and got all that waxy goo stuff out of her hair, then decided to go to breakfast to celebrate!

Strawberry crepes with a side of hash browns for the win!!

A Tough Lesson

Beth gets paid three times a month, but she seems to be out of money a lot. She loves to buy CD's and DVD's and batteries and headbands and notebooks.... it's hard to get her to spend her money on things that last. Diana likes to take her to the zoo or the movies, but too often her money is already spent. We're working on this.

Last week the girls went shopping. Beth, Sharaya, Diana and Allison all spent the day at the mall. We told Beth how much she had to spend in order to have money left over for Sunday and Tuesday. (Church and bowling.) She didn't care. She spent her last little bit on lunch and later, a soda. Sharaya and Diana told her that she had only enough left for breakfast on Sunday (she likes to get a drink and a muffin at the coffee shop at church) OR to go bowling on Tuesday. She was gonna have to choose.

Sunday came and Beth came to our classroom with her drink and in her purse she had a Sprite and two small candy bars. (For later that afternoon.) She had already eaten a muffin.

"Beth you spent your money on breakfast today?"

"No."

"What do you mean, No?"

She pulled out her $10 bill.

"Beth how did you pay for that?"

"I dunno."

Diana tells me that she only gave the cashier $1 yet walked away with all this stuff!!

So we gathered it all up and back upstairs we went. When I spoke with the cashier she said someone in line behind Beth had paid for it. When I asked who, she said they wanted to remain anonymous. I understand the giving heart but this was one time I wished no one had paid.

I took Beth aside and told her that the Lord had provided this for her, but she was not going bowling on Tuesday. I said that she needed to choose between bowling and breakfast and she chose breakfast. It didn't matter how it was paid, she made her choice. I also told her that she wasn't in trouble, I was just trying to explain that she chose breakfast and breakfast was okay. Breakfast was a good choice. But she needed to remember that she chose that over bowling.

I gave her back her stuff and she took off, walking very fast back to the classroom. She wasn't very happy.

Tuesday came... and she was fine! She even did a bunch of chores around the house, with a good attitude! I hope it was a tough lesson.... learned!

Did You Ever Spit Wash a Smudge?

Yesterday was the first day of Athletics! We were so excited! Even Sharaya and Allison decided to come watch Beth practice. (Diana had to work so couldn't come with us.) The pounding rain should have been our first clue. We hopped in the car and drove to the school. No one was there. The place was empty except for two people running on the track. We thought they were absolutely out of their minds. It was pouring!!

We decided to drive over to a far corner of the parkinglot where two guys were standing out in the rain next to their cars. I opened the door (our windows don't always roll down. Sometimes they do. But our windows don't always roll up) and asked if they knew where the Special Olympics were practicing. Turns out he was the coach! Given the pouring rain, they decided to cancel for today. We'll all meet again next week. Same bat time. Same bat channel. (Does anybody else get that?) Anyway, at least the seagulls were having a great time!

Today was youth choir rehearsal. I had a meeting after church for work (I work at our church) so Chuck brought Beth to choir. I waited in the foyer for her then walked her down. I should know better. She's grown up here. Why on earth would I think she wouldn't know where the room was?! As we're walking down the stairs she asked me, "Same room?" Um... yea. I felt like I was treating her like a 7 year old. Cause I was.

The door way was filled with kids in and out, lots of noise. I asked her if she wanted me to come in. She shook her head no and kept walking. I sort of yelled after her, "Remember to turn off your cell phone!" She looked back at me like I had just spit washed a smudge off her face in front of Nick Jonas.
