The day after Diana found her dress we decided to go to New York. We drove to the Rahway Train station and rode into the city. We walked around Central Park, that place is huge! We walked with Sharaya as far as the Met. She could probably spend all day there! Then Diana and I turned and headed out of the park. There was a bakery she wanted to take me to and we decided to go there for brunch.

On our way to the bakery we stopped on a sidewalk and Diana goes, "I think this is where they filmed You've Got Mail. Near the end when he says, 'As long as we both shall live.'" I go, "Yes! And where he tells her 'he' could be the zipper man. 'She'd never have to buy new luggage again!'" I think you're right Diana! This has to be the street! We got to the bakery and Diana was so disappointed that it was closed for renovations. Then I realized why. It was the place in the movie when they decide to meet and she waits inside with a rose and a book... "If you don't like Kathleen Kelly you aren't going to like this girl. Because it IS Kathleen Kelly." That's the bakery!!! Oh my gosh!! And then I was really disappointed too. And we had just watched it on TV the night before! Amazing! (Little did I know the girls had planned the whole thing. They streamed the movie, it wasn't actually on TV!) Have I told you how much I adore my daughters?! 💖
We finally found a place for lunch and Sharaya met us there. Then we took an Uber to One World Trade Center. We had visited there back in 2004 when they were just beginning to rebuild.
We wished we'd had more time so we're planning to go back again in September. We got another Uber to take us to the train station, then rode 45 minutes back Rahway and Diana took us to the airport. It was a whirlwind weekend but one I will always remember!

I have never been to New York City and more than likely will never make it to New York City so I enjoyed reading this post about the sights you saw there. The subway (or train) looked really empty; that is good for social distancing :) Since I haven't been to New York I haven't been to any memorials, but if I did go to New York I would definitely check them out.

Sounds like a beautiful weekend with your girls. And what a time to be in NYC...still looks deserted! September might be a whole different scene! I've only been to NYC once, many many years ago, before the twin towers were built. We had a crazy drive through with my husband's cousins, who lived in NJ at the time. We went to a Yankee's game at Yankee stadium (the old one). Ate in a McDonald's where a woman's purse got snatched right there while we were sitting down eating. That's my memories of NYC! LOL. I like yours better!

Yes, I have seen the twin towers many times as my daughter used to live in the city and I'd go visit. Her husband had just changed jobs just before 9/11 or he would have been at work that morning... Kenner Fitzgerald lost the most lives of any company I think. I have no desire to go to the site again. Too tramatic.
You really packed in a lot of wonderful things back east. That is fun how your daughters set you up! Love it.
What a wonderful time. And I adore You Got Mail! That would be fun to see. Oh, the twin towers. We saw them, sat in their shadow in a little park eating croissants for breakfast, about two or three years before they fell. So deeply sad.
I haven't been to New York City since my senior class trip in 1970. I have no plans to visit. I do love that movie, though!! How fun to see some of the places where it was filmed! Glad you had such a great time with the girls! Making memories with loved ones can't be beat!! xo
How in the world has it been 20 years since 9.11? I have wanted to visit Ground Zero and we had kind of planned a trip to Boston and NYC for fall 2020 and then you-know-what changed all the plans. What a coincidence that you have the 2 photos from the different NY trips taken from the same vantage point. What are the odds?

I am loving your photos. We went to New York in 2016 and I loved it. Central Park was amazing and we went to movie set sights too. So much to see there. How sweet of them to plan out the day. I never saw the Twin Towers but did visit the Memorial. My son was at the twin towers just a month before 9/11. I'm so glad you did this. You'll never forget this trip.
